Qatar promoting hatred of minorities, praising Turkey in school curriculum - Report
Turkey and Iran are presented in a positive light in the texts of Qatar’s education system, while religious minorities, such as Christians and Jews, are viewed negatively, according to a new report from a non-profit education watchdog.
Qatar’s government curriculum promotes intolerance of religious minorities according to a UNESCO and UN guidelines and recommendations on education for peace and tolerance , Saudi broacaster Al Arabiya cited the report by the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se) as saying.
“Christians, along with Jews…are blamed for causing divisions among Muslims,” in Qatar’s curriculum, the report, based on a study of 238 Qatari textbooks from the last four academic years, said.
The curriculum of neighbouring rival Gulf nation, the UAE, on the other hand, “aligns with UNESCO standards and UN declarations,” the report said.
Emirate students, from grades one to 12, are introduced to “the values of tolerance and respect for themselves, and others, both national and global,” the report said.
Qatar and Turkey enjoy close relations, particularly since a diplomatic crisis with the oil-rich Gulf country erupted on June 5, 2017, when the Arab quartet, led by the UAE and Saudi Arabia, accused Qatar of supporting Islamist groups, also backed by Turkey, and having close relations with Iran, with the aim of destabilising the region and threatening the security of neighbouring countries.
